Basic Printmaking: Fabric Printing

September, 19, 2026
1PM to 3PM

Class Description:

All the fun of printmaking on something usable: tote bags and bandanas!  Learn the basics of relief printmaking by decorating fabric items.  We’ll talk about what printmaking is, learn about printmaking tools, and create at least two designs.  We’ll use easy carve blocks, soft and perfect for beginners.  This class involves sharp tools.  Supplies are provided and will include 1 tote bag and 1 bandana.

Some simple designs will be available, however, please feel free to bring your own.  Every student will receive a 3 7/8″ x 5 7/8″ block and two 2″ x 2″ blocks to work on, so keep these dimensions in mind if you bring your own designs.  You’re completely welcome to bring clothing or fabrics you’d like to  print on.  We recommend smooth (but not silky) fabrics and prepare for leaving with pieces that need a day or two to finish curing.

Meet the Instructor:

Joelle Douthit is a multi-media artist primarily working in printmaking, oil paints, and watercolors, chasing natural forms, overlooked details, and has fun with fantasy structures. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Old Dominion University and has appeared in juried shows and galleries around Hampton Roads. She particularly loves sharing her joy in color, line, and composition, and will happily talk about art, design, and supplies, anytime. Joelle has taught private art lessons for several years, and her particular passion in teaching is to spark seeing the world deeply and equipping students with the tools to express it. Joelle is currently working on series featuring untraditional flower perspectives, and fantasy archetypes. She lives in Suffolk, VA with her family, cats, art supplies, and books.
