The Phantom of the Opera
 is a 2004 American musical drama based on the eponymous stage musical. Young ingénue and soprano Christine finds herself tutored by a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. Despite her love for another man, the Phantom’s obsession with her grows, leading him to kidnap Christine to be his eternal bride. Who will be able to stop this dastardly plan? With an all-star cast that includes Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Minnie Driver, and Miranda Richardson, this film is 143 minutes and rated PG-13.

Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film based on the stage musical. In early 1960s Detroit, Curtis Taylor, Jr. signs an R&B trio of young women, the Dreamettes. Curtis take them from backup singers to headliners, all while establishing his own record label and indulging in wheeling and dealing. Personal struggles reign as plus-sized, big-voiced lead singer Effie is phased out to allow softer-voiced looker Deena Jones to front the trio. How long will Curtis keep Deena and the Dreams at the top, and will Effie ever get her due? With an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Danny Glover, this film is 130 minutes and rated PG-13.

The series kicks off on Thursday, January 14, 2021, when Hairspray shimmies its way into your heart. Hairspray is an American musical-romantic comedy film based on the popular stage production. Tracy Turnblad, a teenager with all the right movies in 1962 Baltimore, gets her wish to dance when she’s selected as a regular for a popular television dance show. Upset that Black kids can only dance on the show once a month, Tracy decides she’s going to integrate the show…all without denting her ‘do. With an all-star cast that includes John Travolta, Nikki Blonsky, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Zac Efron, this film is 117 minutes and rated PG.

Please join us for Movies at the Center presented by Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts in partnership with Suffolk Tourism. On Thursday, February 7, 2019, we’ll be showing modern classic film Remember The Titans. This is the true story of a newly appointed African-American coach and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit.

Suburban Virginia schools have been segregated for generations. One Black and one White high school are closed and the students sent to T.C. Williams High School under federal mandate to integrate. The year is seen through the eyes of the football team where the man hired to coach the Black school is made head coach over the highly successful white coach. Based on the actual events of 1971, the team becomes the unifying symbol for the community as the boys and the adults learn to depend on and trust each other. Starring Denzel Washington, this 2000 film is rated PG and has a running time of 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Cady Heron, a home-schooled girl whose parents are zoologists, has recently come back to the United States from Africa and is trying to fit in at high school. While initially finding her friends with the outcasts, Cady finds herself a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George. When they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance? While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy’s 100th birthday, Paddington spots a unique pop-up book in Mr. Gruber’s antique shop, and embarks upon a series of odd jobs to buy it. But when the book is stolen, it’s up to Paddington and the Browns to unmask the thief. This delightful adventure-filled comedy is rated PG and has a running time of 103 minutes.

Admission is free and open to the public; however, donations of new school supplies are gladly accepted.

The famed Belgian moustachioed detective, Hercule Poirot, is in need of balancing things in his life with a small vacation. Instead, the vigilant detective will soon find himself aboard the luxurious Orient Express, sharing a carriage with an eclectic assortment of first-class travelers and an invisible murderer who walks unnoticed among them. When a sudden massive avalanche blocks the tracks, trapping the passengers in the locomotive, the gruesome murder of a fellow commuter will force Poirot to race against time to solve the puzzle before the killer strikes again. Kenneth Branagh directs and leads an all-star cast, including Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Daisy Ridley and Leslie Odom, Jr., in this stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mystery.
