2023 Spring Choral Fest

Come celebrate with an exceptional afternoon of harmonies and melodies! The Spring Choral Fest welcomes the Chowan University Singers under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Thorburn, Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Chowan University.

Chowan University Choir
The Chowan University Singers is an auditioned ensemble performing a variety of classical, sacred, and contemporary choral repertoire. In March 2022, the ensemble traveled to perform at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. Previous performance trips have included concerts throughout North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic region, as well as in Ireland and Italy.

Chowan Singers is under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Thorburn, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Chowan University. Dr. Thorburn holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Rochester, and he performs frequently as a vocal soloist and recitalist. The pianist for the choir is Dejuan Lee, a graduate of the Chowan University music program.

Dive into the big blue world of Disney and Pixar’s FINDING NEMO, JR. This new stage adaptation of the beloved movie “Finding Nemo” follows Nemo and all his friends, Dory, Crush, Marlin and the Tank gang helping Nemo tackle his challenges on his journey. This East Coast premiere is sure to be a fun experience with vibrant costumes, amazing sets, soaring songs, and professional choreography!

Copeland, the founder and artistic director of The Hurrah Players Family Theatre Company and performing arts academy. ICONS: A Tribute Show

ICONS is a tribute show packed with number 1 hits of some of the greatest women from the 60’s all the way to today. This show will keep you enthralled and have you dancing in your seats, as we celebrate some of the most iconic women in music.

ICONS is a perfect complement to “Women’s History” month, portraying your favorite women in music, such as: Cher, Patti La Belle, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Diana Ross. The Tribute Show features six accomplished, powerhouse female vocalists who transform into several singers. ICONS’ esteemed band, Seamless, plays 26 songs live, captivating the audience through different genres of music and motion. 

The audience will be dancing in their seats to:
• The Supremes,’ “Stop in The Name of Love;”
• Janis Joplin’s “Take A Little Piece of My Heart;”
• Tina Turner’s “The Best;”
• Aretha Franklin’s “Respect;” and
• Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.”

MASTERS OF SOUL – CONCERT RESCHEDULED

Due to the unfortunate and tragic death of Al Hundley, the long-time drummer for the Masters of Soul, the January 28, 2023 performance was postponed. We are all saddened by this loss and our condolences extend to the members of Masters of Soul, their families, friends, and fans.

The January 28th performance has been rescheduled to Saturday, MAY 13, 2023 at 8PM. All reserved seat tickets for the January date will be honored. Please note, the original show dates was SOLD OUT. If ticket holders can not attend the May 13th performance we ask that they please contact the Suffolk Center’s Box Office at 757.923.2900.

Disney’s The Lion King Experience Jr is a live musical adaptation of the 1994 animated film, bringing the wonderful music and adventures of the Pride Lands to life onstage based on the Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor, music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice. Disney’s The Lion King Experience Jr is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). Additional music and lyrics by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and Hans Zimmer. Book by Roger Allers & Irene Mecchi.

Open Mic has been popular for some time in the downtown Suffolk area.  Suffolk Center is partnering with Wall Street Café to expand Open Mic and collaborate with local businesses. Based upon the popular Showtime at the Apollo, the show features LIVE performances from local professional, up-and-coming artists, and amateur performers. Attendees are encouraged to Cheer & Boo ~ just like the iconic Showtime at the Apollo!

On JUNE 30th from 7-10 PM, Showtime at The Center kicks-off! The evening is hosted by Drinking on Sunday’s ROSHAWN HOLLAND featuring show band TAVARIS POWELL & DA CREW.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID is a beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

The Drifters

The Drifters, one of Rock & Roll’s founding vocal groups, are the second most successful recording artist of all time, according to Billboard Magazine. Through a historical journey, which included no less than 5 legendary lead singers, including Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King the group’s ongoing story has covered the entire spectrum of Rock & Roll.

They were the first musical group to sell 2 million records with their pop classic, “Up On The Roof”. They were the first African American vocal group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Along with fellow inductees the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Supremes, the Drifters were in the first class of Rock & Roll legends to be initiated into the Hall of Fame. Chowan University Choir

The pianist for the choir is Dejuan Lee, a graduate of the Chowan University music program.

This performance will feature the Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, joined with the Chowan Community Chorus and accompanied by instrumental ensemble. One of the choral masterworks of the Baroque era, the Gloria is a joyous song of praise and thanksgiving in twelve movements using the traditional text from the Latin Mass.

Boys Choir of Hampton Roads

We are pleased to announce that the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads will be singing as part of the the Chowan University Singers performance on April 24, 2022.

The Boys Choir of Hampton Roads (formerly Park Place Boys Choir) was organized in September 1997 as a resource for the boys in Park Place area of Norfolk, to expand their positive image through singing. The main purpose of the choir is to develop in each young singer a self-respect and respect for others based upon clearly stated and solidly proven values, while striving for excellence in academics and cultural personal pursuits. It has been proven that musical training provides a basis for discipline and focus that enhances self-esteem in our youth.

Boys Choir of Hampton Roads in under the direction of Julius E. McCullough, Clarinetist, Composer, Conductor, vocalist is a graduate of Norfolk State College, now, Norfolk State University and has continued his study of music at Temple University and a master’s degree from Virginia State College.

Julius E. McCullough. He is a highly regarded Music Educator, Performer and Music Clinician. He has directed choirs, bands and orchestras in North Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. McCullough was honored to perform as singer with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra in 1974 in the performances of his “Sacred Concerts”

Mr. McCullough is a Board Member of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc., the 2nd Assistant Director of the Eastern Region of the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc, Artistic Director of the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads, Past Director of the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Choir, Past Board Member of NASPAAM, former Assistant Manager of the Valley Forge Music Fair, Devon, PA, a Founding Member of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s Advisory Council and is President of the Tidewater Area Musicians, Inc.
