The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid under the direction of Hugh R. Copeland, the founder and artistic director of The Hurrah Players Family Theatre Company and performing arts academy. Since its incorporation in 1984, The Hurrah Players have been and will continue to be, a shining example to both our students and our community that theatre arts can be a vehicle not only for educational enrichment but for the emotional and social well-being of the participants as well.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID is a beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI)

Disney’s MOANA JR

The Hurrah Players are once again thrilled to be one of the first companies to perform a new Disney Jr. show onstage with the support of Disney Theatrical Productions. Disney’s Moana JR. is a musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film, bringing the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life onstage. Moana JR. features all the beloved songs from the film, written by Tony®, GRAMMY, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, including “How Far I’ll Go,” “Shiny,” and “You’re Welcome.”

This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana JR. is sure to bring out the hero within each of us.

Celebrating the rich stories of Oceania and based on the beliefs and cultures of the people of the Pacific Islands, Moana was developed in collaboration with an Oceanic Trust – a group of anthropologists, cultural practitioners, historians, linguists, and choreographers from the Pacific Islands. The same respect and attention to detail used to develop the film was carried forward in the creation of this stage adaptation and our director and choreographer has worked to study Polynesian storytelling culture to bring to this production.

COVID-19 protocols: Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts values the health of our patrons, performers, and the community. Masks are strongly recommended for gatherings inside our building, consistent with the governor’s policy. For children’s classes and programs (including the October 23 performance of Moana, Jr.), masks are required by all attending.
If you have been exposed to or have contracted COVID-19, the Suffolk Center will issue you a credit for a future performance. Please contact the box office at 757-923-2900 for more information.
