As Is…Music with Purpose

AS IS… Music with Purpose explores how to use music as a creative outlet for emotions and tell stories through lyrics, melodies and chord progressions. As well as raising awareness about social issues and celebrating who we are individually and culturally. Music is more than just entertainment. When we use art and Music with Purpose, we have the power to make change within ourselves and in the World.

About the Artist:

An artist you go to see without knowing exactly what to expect, except that you’re going to feel good. Really good.

Akeylah Simone, from Hampton Roads, VA, is that artist. She delivers stunning performances both in the studio and on stage, fusing genres like Neo-Soul, Rock, R&B, Pop, and Jazz. Her personal, poetic writing style, combined with her sultry, soulful vocals, will leave you entranced.

In just her first two years of releasing original music, Akeylah has:

  • Landed five songs on the Grammy ballot
  • Been voted Encore’s 2021 Best Solo Artist
  • Won ISSA’s 2022 Female Rising Star
  • Named 2023 Best R&B/Soul Artist by Veer Magazine

She’s also earned multiple nominations, including:

  • Best New Artist (Soul Tracks Reader’s Choice Awards)
  • Song of the Year & Best R&B/Soul (Veer Awards)

Akeylah’s love for music is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Raised by two musicians, she developed a passion for singing and musical exploration early on. She always knew she’d be a performer, and by age seven, she was already practicing her Bruce Hornsby set every night, just to be ready.

She frequently joins her father, Bobby Blackhat, on stage and has been featured on several of his albums—singing backup vocals, solos, and even her own cover of “Fever” with her younger sister.

Music has always been her outlet for navigating life. From her first single, Uncertainty, to her debut album Akeylah Simone…AS IS | Black First, she shares her stories with refreshing authenticity. She has opened up her personal journey to the world—and her voice makes it clear where she’s headed.
