TANGLED ROOTS – An Exploration of Diversity, Culture & Identity

Tangled Roots is an exploration into diversity, culture, and identity; celebrating the deeper meaning and expressions of the textured hair community.

Join the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts and Good Society for an afternoon of exploration, reflection, and immersion, as we search for the deeper meaning of the struggles, pathways, and triumphs to be found within the textured hair community. This will be a day full of networking, opportunities for learning, shopping, and relationship building.

Tangled Roots seeks to explore the conversations, feelings, and undertones discovered in the salons and shops of the urban diaspora. Through dialogue, engagement, and connection, Tangled Roots will provide a moment for the greater public to better understand the culture and lifestyle of having textured hair.

Tangled Roots attendees will enjoy three keynote speakers addressing education, economics, and empowerment. We are excited to welcome Reverend Dr. Dwight Riddick, pastor at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Newport News, specializing in leadership development, Dr. Khadijah O. Miller, Dean of the Robert C. Nusbaum Honors College and Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Norfolk State University, lending expertise on the CROWN Act and hair discrimination and Dr. Karima K. Jeffrey-Legette, Professor of African American Literature, Caribbean Literature, Postcolonial Studies, and Womanist/Feminist Theory at Hampton University. Dr. Legette seeks to examine the trauma endured by people of African descent in the United States by providing a compelling interpretation of prevalent, well-received, and recurring images of black women and girls in American popular culture. An informational and educational panel discussion will follow.

Interact with local cosmetology professionals and thought leaders on a host of topics. Uncover deeper meaning as expressed through the works of visual artists. Discover, sample, and purchase a variety of products as you shop the vendor market. Need recommendations on care or styling? Want to meet a new barber or beautician? Or maybe just a chance to be in the atmosphere of it all? Head into the Tangled Roots “pop-up” salon and barbershop to see what it really feels, smells, and looks like.

Tangled Roots highlights an assortment of vendors promoting their business, services, and products. Some of the vendors include Brittney Eldridge from Britt Brat Nail’Dit located in Suffolk, she will be offering health and beauty products. Jilohn Williams from Body Love in Virginia Beach, will be selling hair products, soaps, and lotions and Erica Baker from Dazzling Boutique located in Suffolk, will be offering the latest fashions and jewelry.

From youth to senior, all identities and orientations are welcome. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a takeaway and point of engagement for everyone. Come enjoy this free festivity that celebrates the beauty, power, passion, and excitement within the textured hair community.
