2018-19 Class Sessions

Saturday, September 29, 2018

Instructor: Dale Wayne

Location: Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts

Ages: Adults, 18+

Registration required. Space is limited and classes are subject to participation minimums. Register online up to a week prior to a session starting or by calling 757-923-0003.

Class Detail:

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts invites educators of Hampton Roads to an amazing opportunity.  Teachers will be instructed in the creation of artwork from recycled plastic bottle which will be contributed to a community project.  Links to teacher’s curriculum include possible applications to science, visual arts and social consciousness. Teachers can include color mixing, transforming shapes, and contributing to a public installation in the Suffolk Center.  Potential discussions are possible with students about the environment, other innovations using recycled materials, or water shortages requiring the use of bottled water.  Teachers will be equipped with an understanding of the techniques Dale Wayne uses and will return to their classrooms to engage students to understand the project, learn about a working artist’s work who takes her initial inspiration from Dale Chihuly.  They can create (collect and transform plastic water bottles into blossoms), collaborate (work in community with other schools by contributing their creations to the installation), and celebrate (visit the finished display). Students can learn about a contemporary artist and her work using recycled plastic bottles to express a theme by using critical thinking skills.

Educators attending the workshop will be able to bring many of the required elements of the Science Standards of Learning to their students.  Areas which Dale Wayne’s techniques can be implemented are respect for living things, public policy and legislation, economic costs and benefits, personal responsibility, citizenship, patience and persistence, and many others. “The Science Standards of Learning have explicit standards relating to recycling in the kindergarten (SOL K.10), grade one (SOL 1.8), and grade three (SOL 3.10) standards.  In addition to these standards, it would seem appropriate to discuss recycling when covering topics in other grade levels that relate to natural resources, maintaining air and water quality, and general policies related to the environment.  It should be the goal of every school to integrate recycling with hands-on activities as part of the school recycling programs.  It is imperative that faculty and staff, at all levels, and students are educated about the need to recycle.  This education should include the concepts of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” (Virginia Department of Education: Guidelines for Recycling Materials in Public Schools, 2010)

The workshop encompasses a multitude of the goals for the Visual Arts Standards of Learning.  Wayne will demonstrate skills necessary for creative, communication and artistic expression. Her creations illustrate an understanding the elements of art and principles of design.  Her workshop will employ critical evaluation skills when creating works of art.

Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel–the precursor to the plein air easels of today–allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” – artistdaily.com

Wish you knew The Electric Slide whenever you go to a wedding? Do they play the Cupid Shuffle at your reunion and you try to follow along? We will be doing beginner line dances that you will see at Christmas parties, reunions, weddings, and cruises. Some might call them Old School, I call them Standards!

I will be teaching approximately 3 dances per session and we will go at a pace that suits the students. The steps for each dance will be broken down and learned piece by piece. Each session will review the dances from the previous week and add new dances.
