This exhibit, “In Plein Site” will include works that were created during the Plein Air Invitational 2021 in Suffolk on September 10-12 and other work in the plein air style.

What is Plein Air Painting?:
Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.”

Suffolk Sister Cities Showcase

Suffolk Sister Cities International sponsors an annual Young Artists and Authors Showcase that help foster a sense of global citizenship and goodwill for young students.  Winners from this juried exhibit of both artwork and writers will go on to compete with students throughout the country. Suffolk has two Sister Cities; Suffolk County, England and Oderzo, Italy.

The Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) is an annual contest that encourages youth worldwide to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, and photography. Submissions are centered around an annual theme and judged based on originality, composition, and theme interpretation.

2020 THEME – “ONE WORLD: OUT OF MANY, WE ARE ONE”

This year’s theme asks students to explore these questions by highlighting citizen diplomacy and the creative ways that we create peace through people-to-people interaction.

  • How can internationally engaged future leaders help communities address global challenges of – social unity and peace – in the 21st century?
  • How does international experience affect an individual or community’s ability to adapt?
  • What are some examples/illustrations of coming together and celebrating our humanity?

Please join the Suffolk Sister Cities Student Artists on Thursday, February 6, 2020 for a FREE Reception at the Suffolk Center, from 6:30 -8PM.
