A Vibrant Community Asset
The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is a story of turning a dream into reality, of preserving Suffolk’s past, of fostering collaboration, and of celebrating community.
Thanks to the foresight and years of diligent efforts by community leaders, the building that housed Suffolk High School from 1922-1990 became a grand cultural arts center, opening its doors in the summer of 2006.
Restoration and Preservation: The Critical Need
The building that houses the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is 100 years old. Extensive repairs are necessary to continue to preserve the building because of damage caused by significant leaks. Both the interior and exterior have sustained substantial damage.
All of the windows will be replaced. On the interior, repairs will be made where ceiling and wall plaster are crumbling. To prevent further leaks, the building will be sealed with a high-performance coating that will protect the brick, stone, and concrete elements.
Upgrades are needed for our 16-year-old sound and light systems in both our magnificent Birdsong Theater and our ballroom. We’ll also be replacing a section of our theater seats to create more accessible seating for guests of all abilities and sizes.
And, the grand pergola over our brick walkway main entrance will be covered and the walkway regraded to protect guests in inclement weather.
Can You Help?
We need your help to make these critical repairs! We must raise $4.5 million for these urgent renovations, and although we’ve made substantial progress toward our fundraising goal, we need your support to finish the project. The Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is a nonprofit organization, and we rely on donors—people like you—to keep our doors open, to keep our theater and galleries running, to continue our education programs, and to maintain our historic building for the next 100 years.
We invite your generous gift to the capital campaign through the link above, or you can mail a check to 110 West Finney Avenue, Suffolk VA 23434. Please make checks payable to SCCA with “capital campaign” in the memo line. We are also ready to accept gifts of stock, planned gifts, and charitable distributions from IRA accounts. Donors who give $5,000 or more will be listed by name in a permanent display at the Suffolk Center. If you wish, you can also make your gift anonymous. Donations to the campaign may be given in honor or in memory of someone. For more information on your giving options, please contact our Development Office at 757-923-0003, ext. 102.
