Food pantries typically need non-perishable foods, also known as shelf-stable foods, that are high in protein and have a long shelf life. Food banks don’t accept perishable foods like dairy, meat, produce, leftovers, or baked goods. Some items to consider donating include:
- Peanut butter: A high-protein food that’s popular with food banks and families with children
- Canned vegetables: A nutrient-dense food that lasts a long time on shelves
- Canned fish: A good source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids
- Pasta: Whole grain pasta is preferred
- Rice: Brown rice is preferred
- Cooking oils: Vegetable, sunflower, and extra virgin oils are all welcome
- Broth: Makes meals more nutritious and tasty
