Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World
January 24, 2024
Grades K – 5

Based on the award-winning children’s book of the same title written and illustrated by Laurence Anhalt and premiered in 2019 at Ft. Worth Opera. This opera tells the real-life story of Marianna Morillo Safa, a young girl living in Mexico City, and her friendship with famed painter, Frida Kahlo, who has her portrait painted by Ms. Kahlo. At first, Marianna is nervous about meeting Frida because of strange rumors about the eccentric artist. But Marianna quickly befriends Frida and learns two important lessons in the process: that art can happen anywhere and how important it is to be brave even when you feel scared. Music by Joe Illick, original libretto by Mark Campbell.

Presented by Virginia Opera.
