Relief Printmaking: Basic Techniques

🎨 Class Description 🎨

Curious about printmaking? In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll discover the history and hands-on basics of relief printmaking — one of the oldest and most versatile art forms. Together we’ll explore the tools of the trade, practice carving techniques, and create at least two original prints you’ll be proud to take home.

You’ll start by carving simple designs (we’ll use leaves as inspiration), then ink and press your block to reveal bold, textured images. Want to try your own idea? Bring a sketch or design and turn it into a one-of-a-kind print! By the end of class, you’ll leave with your carved block, your finished prints, and the know-how to keep experimenting at home.

All supplies are included, and no prior experience is necessary — just bring your creativity and be ready to get a little inky.

Please note: this class involves the use of sharp tools.

Meet the Instructor:

Joelle Douthit is a multi-media artist primarily working in printmaking, oil paints, and watercolors, chasing natural forms, overlooked details, and has fun with fantasy structures. She particularly loves sharing her joy in color, line, and composition, and will happily talk about art, design, and supplies, anytime. Joelle has taught private art lessons for several years, and her particular passion in teaching is to spark seeing the world deeply and equipping students with the tools to express it. Joelle is currently working on series featuring untraditional flower perspectives, and fantasy archetypes. She lives in Suffolk, VA with her family, cats, art supplies, and books.
