LOVE LOCAL Bands!
Red, White & Brews features performances by three local bands: JUST US, COOL TONES and STOLEN. Each group is so proud to be apart of this Veterans Day Celebration and eager to share their favorite songs with concertgoers on the Suffolk Center’s BirdSong Theater stage.

JUST US will have guests singing along to Classic Country – songs by Merle Haggard, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, and Alabama. JUST US Band member Bill Daughtry shared that the group has been practicing non-stop and they can’t wait to play their favorite song … ‘The next one on the playlist.”

THE COOL TONES deliver Classic Rock, with crowd favorites by Van Morrison and Steely Dan. Tim Daniel said the band’s favorite song to perform is Neil Young’s classic ‘Cinnamon Girl’. The Suffolk Center even installed a special dance floor knowing The Cool Tones performance would release the urge to shake a leg. Adding that they are super excited to be playing in honor of our veterans.

STOLEN is the third band to take the stage with their ‘Acoustic Everything’ style. Patrons will love hearing favorites by Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffet. Win Winslow shared the band’s favorite song is Jamey Johnson’s ‘In Color’ but no show would be complete without the Zac Brown Band’s ‘Chicken Fried’. All three bands will share the stage for an extra special heartfelt tribute to all our Veterans, Active Military and First Responders.

THE LITTLE MERMAID

The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, presents Disney’s The Little Mermaid under the direction of Hugh R. Copeland, the founder and artistic director of The Hurrah Players Family Theatre Company and performing arts academy. Since its incorporation in 1984, The Hurrah Players have been and will continue to be, a shining example to both our students and our community that theatre arts can be a vehicle not only for educational enrichment but for the emotional and social well-being of the participants as well.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID is a beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).

The Way Down Wanderers

Voted #1 of 10 New Artists You Need To Know - Rolling Stone Country Winter 2019

The Way Down Wanderers are from the very heartland of America – central Illinois, Peoria, to be exact which is reflected in their distinctive sound, which draws on elements of bluegrass, but also touches on classic rock influences including the multi-part harmonies of the Beach Boys and The Band’s hybrid soul, as well as the roots qualities of The Avett Brothers and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, with surprising elements of jazz, classical music and even hip-hop.

The Way Down Wanderers are often referred to by fans as one of the hardest-working, hardest-touring bands on the circuit today, the 5-piece Illinois-based act not only proves that classification with their jam-packed tour schedule but also on stage every night, with youthful exuberance and a lively stage show, as reliable as it is infectious. High energy percussion, mandolin, guitar, bass, banjo, and fiddle weave seamlessly together to create an experience for fans that has sold out shows across the UK and the United States, filling the front rows with fans not just singing along to one tune, but singing along to all of them.

“Somewhere on the spectrum between Old Crow Medicine Show and Mumford and Sons lies the spirited bluegrass based artistry of The Way Down Wanderers. It is joyful, daring and occasionally sublime.” – Associated Press

The Good Morning Nags

The Good Morning Nags is an NYC-based roots-country band that finds inspiration in traditional American folk music as well as more contemporary styles.

“Six-piece NYC based ensemble The Good Morning Nags is currently in the middle of making a name for themselves… recipe for musical success”

“The Good Morning Nags demonstrate superb musicianship and songwriting leaving no wonder of how they became a staple of the New York folk scene.”
— Indie Spoonful

Will Overman’s incomparable voice — he made it through two levels of NBC’s “The Voice” —  is at once melodic as it is relentless, as refreshingly unique as it is familiar and evocative. Overman’s music — call it Americana, a mix of folk, country, rock, and pop — is as energetic as it is passionate. It can be haunting and evocative yet sincere, sweet.

Musically and lyrically, Overman draws deeply from his Virginia roots, producing a rare combination of enticing straight-ahead, hard-charging rhythm and riffs and introspective melodies paired with sleek vocals. He takes on love, life and loss. All with an edge driven deep in reality.

Whether performing solo or with a full band, Overman is a poet, reminiscent of a young Bruce Springsteen, (think “Nebraska”) or Bob Dylan. He’s a folksinger and a rocker (think “Born to Run”), whether performing solo or fronting a talented group of musicians swinging from flawless riffs to intoxicating beats.

And while his music is rooted deeply in the South, it transcends genres and convention, blending essential elements of rock, folk, and country, wrapped in a thin varnish of pop sensibility, to create a concoction reminiscent of Ryan Adams, Josh Ritter, with the softness of James Taylor.

Overman has quickly built a reputation as a fan favorite at music festivals including MerleFest, Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival, Front Porch Fest and Appaloosa Roots Music Festival, and Lynchfest. He was a finalist in the “Rockn to Lockn” contest.

Overman has played hundreds of shows from Burlington, Vermont to Columbus, Ohio,  New York City and Washington, D.C., to Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee, and in between. He’s busked in lonely subway stations and performed to sold-out crowds in Charlottesville.

In 2017, Overman found himself at a crossroads, both literally and figuratively, professionally and personally. He said farewell to the band that has borne his name over the past several years and embarked on his first solo project since 2013.

“Crossroads,” his newly released solo EP produced by Rockfish Music, is without a doubt his most self-reflective work yet. He recently submitted one of the singles, “Decatur,” to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert.

Drawing comparisons to Jason Isbell and Damien Rice, Overman carries an unwavering commitment to his music and to his fans. Soulful and unforgettable. Addictive and sometimes playful. Meaningful and real. Those factors, plus a transcendent passion and unyielding commitment to his craft, are what truly define this rising, must-see young artist, who has only just begun what promises to be a long and fruitful musical journey.

Having been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and most recently the South Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame, The Embers featuring Craig Woolard are honored to carry the moniker of North Carolina’s Official Ambassadors of Music.

The Embers are widely considered a musical marvel and have laid the groundwork for what has become known as ‘Beach Music’ in the Carolinas, Virginias, the gulf coast region of North America and every beach in between. A true musical tradition with which many Americans have listened to from childhood to adulthood. The Embers consider the genre of Beach Music as “music with a memory” and have been creating lasting memories since its inception in 1958. Simply put – Heart and Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Feel Good Music.

It is this drive to create music that has led the Leahy children to achieve so much, even at their young ages. Still all in elementary school, they are all accomplished multi-instrumentalists and released their first self-titled CD in December 2015.

Live performances are filled with the high-energy, infectious Celtic-based music people associate with the Leahy heritage. Fiddle, cello, French accordion, vocals, piano, and French-Canadian step-dancing all find a voice on stage. The Leahy children, so in love with what they do, enamor audiences and keep them constantly coming back for more.
