If you have taken the Basic Digital Photography Course and want to build on your skills, then this six-week class is for you! Come learn a more in-depth look into the world of photography. In this class we need to have an understanding and working knowledge of: f/stop, shutter speed, ISO, and manually taking images. Items to be covered more extensively are: flash photography, composition, night shooting, posing, using the shutter to blur action in your image, filters, basic computer editing, macro photography, lens filters and other ideas you may have and need more knowledge of to make your images even better.

Here we will explore the basics of taking pictures and learn which methods and techniques make for the best photos. Some areas we will cover are: camera body, f-stop, lenses, shutter speed, composition, posing, and flash photography.

Class Detail: Learning to paint doesn’t have to be intimidating. With nearly twenty years of experience in oil painting, instructor Genevieve Lawrence will walk students through the basics of creating a painting from life. Students will learn under-painting techniques, color mixing, oil paint and medium properties, glazing, layering, and much more. This class is geared towards beginners, but all are welcome.  *supplies list available on Suffolk Center’s website: suffolkcenter.org.

  • 8×10 in. drawing pad
  • 6B drawing pencil
  • Two 11×14 in. stretched and gessoed canvases (any brand)
  • Painting Palette 11×14 in. or larger, preferably glass or plastic
  • Blick Palette Knives by RGM, style 52 (metal)
  • Two small glass jars (any kind will do, they don’t have to come from an art store)
  • One Blick Studio Bristle Brush, filbert size 12
  • One Blick Studio Bristle Brush, filbert size 6
  • Three Blick Studio Bristle Brushes, filbert size 2

Class Detail: Spend one hour creating your very own glass-blown piece of artwork. You will be able to work with a professional glass artist. Neil Duman shows his love for art through his flowing designs of colorful glass. These symmetrical works portray visions of beauty and relaxation that will catch the eye as light projects through them.

*All supplies are provided. Once registered, you will receive an email scheduling an hour time-slot between 10am-4pm. First come, first serve.

Plein Air Information Meeting

May 11, 2019     11AM- 12:30PM
Location:  Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts
Room:  O’Connor Suite

In preparation for the Plein Air Event on May 18th, an information meeting will be held on May 11th from 11AM – 12:30 at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts in the O’Connor Suite on the first floor.

Suffolk artists Barbara Harris and Sandy Waters will be on hand to introduce painters to the concept of “Plein Air” painting and discuss with painters what they will need to bring. This event is free and open to the public.

Plein  Air painting is about leaving the studio and painting and drawing in the outdoors.  The practice dates back centuries but was made into an art form by the French impressionists.

The event on May 18th  is open to all artists.   Participants will bring their own paints, easel, and canvases.  Artists gather at the Suffolk Center from 8:00-8:30 a.m. for coffee and sign in and then they will disperse to begin painting.  Registration will be available at the information meeting, the fee is $25.00.

Class Detail: This is an introductory class to learn how to “throw” vases, cups, plates and develop your clay skills using the potter’s wheel.   Intermediate and advanced “throwing” students are welcome as well as hand builders because individual attention is given to each student.  These students will work on special projects to improve their clay forms and decorative creativity.
