Solace: Open Mic Night

Consisting of an open mic/spoken word performance, workshops, and a visual art exhibition, Solace: Healing Through the Arts aims to bring individuals of all backgrounds together to find their voice and tell their story. Over a six-week period in October and November, this series of programs give space for a diverse community of people to find solace or healing from trauma, illness, isolation, grief, and/or related experiences, including, but not limited to, the past year’s world, national, and local events.

We believe in inclusivity and believe everyone has a story to tell, whether that is through word, song, or visual arts. We believe that our mission is most effectively fulfilled through a commitment to inclusiveness as a core value and practice. We invite artists and community members of any background, socioeconomic status, discipline, and experience level.

On November 5, 2021, we will have the Solace open-mic performance for all performing arts (spoken word, poetry, song, dance). This is open to anyone 15 and up to tell their story through performance.
We thank our SOLACE Community Partners

Glenn Miller Orchestra WEBSITE

The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra

…The Miller Sound Lives Forever!

The first Glenn Miller Orchestra did not make it at all. It was a total and absolute economic failure. But Glenn knew what he wanted, held to that dedication and relentlessly worked to succeed. He launched his second band – the one that lives on today – in March of 1938. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been a “hit” ever since. The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all dance bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930’s and 40’s. A matchless string of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres, hotels and dance pavilion, built and sustained the momentum of popularity.

Glenn disbanded his musical organization in 1942 at the height of its popularity to volunteer for the Army. There, he organized and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to entertain servicemen performing numerous live and radio shows. On December 15, 1944, Major Miller took off in a single engine plane from Europe to precede his band to France, disappearing over the English Channel, never to be seen again. The army declared him officially dead a year later.

With the release of the major motion movie The Glenn Miller Story featuring Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson in 1954, interest and popular demand led the Miller Estate to authorize the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. On June 6, 1956, and under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance, the reformed Glenn Miller Orchestra performed its first concert and has been on the road ever since. Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trombonists Buddy Morrow, Jimmy Henderson, Larry O’Brien and Gary Tole, and tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart. Since January 2012, vocalist Nick Hilscher leads the band.

Today, the 18 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements both from the civilian band and the AAFB libraries. Additionally, it also plays some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Miller style and sound.

Just as it was in Glenn’s day, the Glenn Miller Orchestra today is still the most sought after big band in the world.

Chatham County Line WEBSITE

Chatham County Line

Come 2020, Chatham County Line will have been a staple of the North Carolina music scene for two decades. Embracing an all acoustic instrumentation and the modern songwriting of leader Dave Wilson the band has graced stages all across the U.S. as well as mainland Europe, Scandinavia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. With seven studio albums of original material to pull from, CCL has a sound all their own and a stage show to match. Songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Dave Wilson pulls tunes out of an ether that is inspired by a shelf bending collection of vinyl records from the 20’s to the 20’s. One listen to their all covers release “Sharing the Covers” [Yep Roc Records 2019] will give you an idea of those inspirations, with songs from the likes of Wilco and Beck shared with those of John Lennon, Tom Petty and John Hartford.

With the recent retirement of founding member Chandler Holt (banjo), the band decided to push their sound a little bit more into the modern world and embrace the use of drums onstage. “We’ve had drums on several albums, most notably Wildwood, and our audience always responded well to those tunes” says Dave Wilson. John Teer who rotates from Mandolin to Fiddle all while singing soaring harmony adds “We’ve done an Electric Holiday Tour for the past 12 years that features an expanded group of musicians on the stage so we’re no stranger to a backbeat.”

With the release of 2020’s Strange Fascination on YepRoc Records, look for the core of CCL; Dave Wilson, John Teer, and Greg Readling [Bass, Pedal Steel] as well as a rotating cadre of drummers to keep traveling the highways, byways and airways to share their special canon of songs with the world.

Disney’s MOANA JR

The Hurrah Players are once again thrilled to be one of the first companies to perform a new Disney Jr. show onstage with the support of Disney Theatrical Productions. Disney’s Moana JR. is a musical adaptation of the 2016 Disney animated film, bringing the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life onstage. Moana JR. features all the beloved songs from the film, written by Tony®, GRAMMY, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, including “How Far I’ll Go,” “Shiny,” and “You’re Welcome.”

This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana JR. is sure to bring out the hero within each of us.

Celebrating the rich stories of Oceania and based on the beliefs and cultures of the people of the Pacific Islands, Moana was developed in collaboration with an Oceanic Trust – a group of anthropologists, cultural practitioners, historians, linguists, and choreographers from the Pacific Islands. The same respect and attention to detail used to develop the film was carried forward in the creation of this stage adaptation and our director and choreographer has worked to study Polynesian storytelling culture to bring to this production.

Jim Newsom and the Cloudless Sky

Jim Newsom is an award-winning singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is well known and highly regarded throughout southeastern Virginia. His current band, Jim Newsom and the Cloudless Sky, includes Gail Keller Smith on piano, keyboards and steel drum, and Rick Jebavy on the drums.

The band’s latest album, Peace Love Happiness, is Jim’s ninth album overall. Released in February, 2021, the recording features fourteen new originals written since his 2018 CD, New Set of Dreams. Unlike that recording, on which Jim played all the instruments himself, Peace Love Happiness is a group effort recorded with social distancing measures in place during the depths of the pandemic.

Jim’s original songs cover a wide range of styles and touch on a diverse range of subject matter. Besides the title track, Peace Love Happiness includes his reflection on a lifetime of musicmaking in “I Am Not a Jukebox,” as well as a melodic consideration of the fact that “The Days of Being Bob Dylan Are Gone.” “Our Finest Hour” offers hope, even in the midst of difficult times. “My Daddy’s Records” is a remembrance of growing up tuned into the classic hits of the ‘60s while also enjoying the “sassy, brassy big band” music of his parents’ generation. “One Kiss” is a joyous piece of reggae-infused fluff enhanced with Gail’s steel drum accompaniment.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jim grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, graduating from Suffolk High School and Virginia Tech. A professional musician for fifty years, he is also a highly regarded music writer and critic whose work has been published in the All Music Guide, PortFolio Weekly and VEER Magazine and other publications. He is well known throughout the area as a television and radio personality, having hosted programs on the local PBS and NPR affiliates, WHRO-TV and FM, since 1983.
