2023 Spring Choral Fest

Come celebrate with an exceptional afternoon of harmonies and melodies! The Spring Choral Fest welcomes the Chowan University Singers under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Thorburn, Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Chowan University.

Chowan University Choir
The Chowan University Singers is an auditioned ensemble performing a variety of classical, sacred, and contemporary choral repertoire. In March 2022, the ensemble traveled to perform at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. Previous performance trips have included concerts throughout North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic region, as well as in Ireland and Italy.

Chowan Singers is under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Thorburn, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Chowan University. Dr. Thorburn holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Rochester, and he performs frequently as a vocal soloist and recitalist. The pianist for the choir is Dejuan Lee, a graduate of the Chowan University music program.

Dive into the big blue world of Disney and Pixar’s FINDING NEMO, JR. This new stage adaptation of the beloved movie “Finding Nemo” follows Nemo and all his friends, Dory, Crush, Marlin and the Tank gang helping Nemo tackle his challenges on his journey. This East Coast premiere is sure to be a fun experience with vibrant costumes, amazing sets, soaring songs, and professional choreography!

The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, presents Disney’s & Pixar’s FINDING NEMO JR. under the direction of Hugh R. Copeland, the founder and artistic director of The Hurrah Players Family Theatre Company and performing arts academy. Since its incorporation in 1984, The Hurrah Players have been and will continue to be, a shining example to both our students and our community that theatre arts can be a vehicle not only for educational enrichment but for the emotional and social well-being of the participants as well.

ICONS: A Tribute Show

ICONS is a tribute show packed with number 1 hits of some of the greatest women from the 60’s all the way to today. This show will keep you enthralled and have you dancing in your seats, as we celebrate some of the most iconic women in music.

ICONS is a perfect complement to “Women’s History” month, portraying your favorite women in music, such as: Cher, Patti La Belle, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Diana Ross. The Tribute Show features six accomplished, powerhouse female vocalists who transform into several singers. ICONS’ esteemed band, Seamless, plays 26 songs live, captivating the audience through different genres of music and motion.

The audience will be dancing in their seats to:
• The Supremes,’ “Stop in The Name of Love;”
• Janis Joplin’s “Take A Little Piece of My Heart;”
• Tina Turner’s “The Best;”
• Aretha Franklin’s “Respect;” and

MASTERS OF SOUL – CONCERT RESCHEDULED

Due to the unfortunate and tragic death of Al Hundley, the long-time drummer for the Masters of Soul, the January 28, 2023 performance was postponed. We are all saddened by this loss and our condolences extend to the members of Masters of Soul, their families, friends, and fans.

The January 28th performance has been rescheduled to Saturday, MAY 13, 2023 at 8PM. All reserved seat tickets for the January date will be honored. Please note, the original show dates was SOLD OUT. If ticket holders can not attend the May 13th performance we ask that they please contact the Suffolk Center’s Box Office at 757.923.2900.

TIDEWATER WINDS “Santa Swings”

One night only, December 17th 7:30 pm, the Little Big Band of Tidewater Winds performs Santa Swings! Experience the joyful sounds of the season and sing-a-long songs that will make this concert a new family holiday tradition! In addition, the evening features a special appearance by the Suffolk Center Singers, directed by Mrs. Toni Cotturone. The evening features pre-show family fun activities, holiday shopping, and photo-ops with Santa!

On Saturday, December 17 the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts shares a BIG day of holiday festivities including Brunch with Santa, an amazing Holiday Artisan Market, free ornament making for kids, caroling by The Doorway Singers, and Tidewater Winds Big Band Holiday: ‘SANTA SWINGS’ at 7:30 PM.

The day kicks-off with ‘Brunch with Santa’ at Da’lish Restaurant, located on the first floor of the Suffolk Center. Enjoy a special holiday menu while you visit with the Santa and Mrs. Claus! ‘Brunch with Santa’ has two seating’s, 9:00 AM or 10:30 AM, Children 5 and under free, $6 for Children ages 6-12, and all others are $12. Reservations are available by calling Da’lish Restaurant at 757.809.0378.

Festivities continue with a fabulous Holiday Artist Market from 12:00 – 7:00 PM, rain or shine inside the Suffolk Center’s Taylor Ballroom, admission is FREE. The Holiday Artist Market is a great way to shop local and support the arts. The Holiday Artist Market showcases 35 Artisans with gift options for everyone!

At 6:00 PM the holiday merriment continues with pre-show photo-ops with SANTA and holiday crooning by The Doorway Singers, Hampton Roads’ premiere vocal group, as they stroll the Center in perfect four-part harmony. Enjoy complimentary hot cider and hot chocolate or relax with a pre-show beer or wine, available at the Center’s cash bar. Make sure to leave some time to stroll the two award-winning art galleries featuring ‘Takin’ Care of Business’, an interactive art exhibition spotlighting Suffolk Business from the past and present.

Disney’s The Lion King Experience Jr is a live musical adaptation of the 1994 animated film, bringing the wonderful music and adventures of the Pride Lands to life onstage based on the Broadway production directed by Julie Taymor, music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice. The Kyiv City Ballet, under the artistic direction of Ivan Kozlov, announced on June 14, 2022 a U.S. Tour from September 15 to October 25, 2022. The Fall tour is a US premiere and marks the Kyiv City Ballet’s first United States performances ever.

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is honored to be one of the major cultural arts centers across the country that are coming together to open their doors and their hearts to welcome the Kyiv City Ballet, in-residence at the Suffolk Center September 19- 22, 2022. It is very clear this company and their artistry will have great appeal to non-dance and dance audiences alike.

“We are honored to share the beauty of ballet with US audiences, through Ukranian artists” said Ivan Kozlov, Artistic Director. “Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement. It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.”

The day before Ukraine was invaded in February 2022, the Kyiv City Ballet unknowingly took one of the last flights out of Kyiv. The company flew to Paris to begin a long planned tour. They have not returned home. The country of France sheltered them and the company has been performing throughout France, and now Europe, since the invasion began.

September 20th & 21st: Suffolk Center will host interactive Kyiv City Ballet Workshops, Demonstrations, and Master Classes on Tuesday, September 20th and Wednesday 21st working with local schools and dance companies throughout Virginia during Kyiv City Ballet’s residency in Suffolk, VA.

Wednesday, September 21, 2022: We are thrilled to share that Kyiv City Ballet will perform two evening performances on the Center’s Birdsong Theater stage. On Wednesday, September 21, 2022 at 7:00 PM patrons will delight in a performance of two ballets, comprising a special ‘Tribute to Peace’ Ukraine Repertoire:

A Tribute to Peace (choreography by Ekaterina & Ivan Kozlov) a neo-classical work,
Men of Kyiv (choreography by Pavlo Virsky) a Ukrainian folk dance.

Thursday, September 22, 2022: Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to see Kyiv City Ballet perform their full-length performance of Swan Lake on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 7:00 PM (choreography by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Ivan Kozlov).

For an extraordinary opportunity the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts will host a ‘Meet & Greet’ Finale Reception for guests to mingle, enjoy refreshments, and take photos with the Kyiv City Ballet. This special opportunity will take place prior to Swan Lake on Thursday, September 22, 5:00 – 6:30 PM in the Center’s Taylor Ballroom. Meet & Greet Reception tickets are limited.

Kyiv City Ballet, founded in 2012, mission is to bring joy to audiences through ballet by bringing exemplary artists to theaters around the world. In the past decade, the company has successfully toured throughout dozens of countries on four continents.

Two of Ukraine’s prima ballerinas: Krystina Kadashevych and Oksana Bondarenko will perform with the company on their US tour. The company’s principal dancer is Vsevolod Maevskiy, a former soloist of the Mariinsky Ballet and Kozlov’s former student.

Ivan Kozlov
Since 2014, Ivan Kozlov has been the executive of the theater, “Kyiv City Ballet” with which he has successfully toured Europe and the world. Choreographer and teacher Ivan Anatolievich Kozlov was born on December 13, 1982. He is the Ex-Premier of the National Opera of Ukraine, The St. Petersburg Eifman Ballet, IBT (Internationale Ballet Theater), and the Mariinsky Theater.

In 2000, after graduating from the KGHU (Kyiv State Choreographic School), under the tutelage of the Honored Artist of Ukraine, Vladimir Denisenko, Ivan Kozlov was invited to join the ballet troupe of the National Opera of Ukraine, and simultaneously to the world-famous troupe of Boris Eifman in St. Petersburg. He worked as an artist in both troupes.

During his work in the theater of B. Eifman, Ivan performed the leading parts in the following repertoire: “Red Giselle”, “Don Quixote”, “Russian Hamlet”, “Anna Karenina”, and “The Brothers Karamazov”. In the troupe of the National Opera of Ukraine, he performed the leading parts in the ballets Swan Lake, Giselle, Spartacus, Don Quixote, Viennese Waltz, and many others. Ivan Kozlov worked under contract as a leading soloist of the “Internationale Ballet Theater” in the United States.

From 2007 to 2010, he was the premier of the ballet troupe of the Mariinsky Theater, where he performed the leading parts in nearly the entire repertoire of the theater, as well as in numerous concert numbers. Ivan is a laureate of many ballet competitions, including the Serge Lifar International Competition (2002, silver medal) and the X Moscow International Competition (2005, silver medal).
